Objective To explore the characteristics of different factors of anhedonia in first-episode schizophrenia (SZ) and its correlation with clinical symptoms, cognitive functioning and social functioning. Methods A total of 31 patients with first-episode schizophrenia who met the diagnostic criteria of the International Classification of Diseases (10th Revision) (ICD-10) ,and 33 healthy controls were enrolled. Temporal Experiences of Pleasure Scale (TEPS) and Repetitive Battery of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) were applied to assess anhedonia and cognitive function for each participants. The Positive and Negative Symptom Scale (PANSS) for symptoms and the Personal and Social Functioning Scale (PSP) for social cognitive functioning were administered to the patients. Pearson correlation was used to evaluate the correlation between anhedonia and clinical symptoms, cognitive functioning and social functioning. Results The patient group had a statistically significant lower TEPS consummatory pleasure scores than healthy controls[(27.71±5.48)vs.(31.58±5.92), t=2.705, P=0.009]. The consummatory pleasure scores was not linearly correlated with PANSS, RBANS, or PSP scores in the patient group (P>0.05). Conclusion Patients with first-episode schizophrenia exhibit consumer anhedonia but not anticipatory anhedonia. Consumer anhedonia in patients with first-episode schizophrenia may be lack of correlation with clinical symptoms, cognitive functioning or social functioning.
