Background Mindful parenting is related to the physical and mental health of adolescents, but there is limited empirical research on mindfulness parenting, and no research has explored the impact of mindfulness parenting on adolescent aggression and the actor and partner effect through parenting stress. Objective To explore the impact of mindful parenting on adolescent aggression through parenting stress and the actor-partner effect. Methods A total of 907 families from three classes in five grades from fifth grade in elementary school to third grade in junior high school in a city in Sichuan Province were selected as the research subjects during Sept. 2023. The adolescents, fathers, and mothers were surveyed through questionnaires. The Chinese version of the Mindful Parenting Scale was used to measure the level of mindful parenting, and the Parenting Stress Index/Short Form was used to measure the level of parenting stress. The aggression dimension of the Youth Self-Report (YSR) was used to measure adolescent aggression. Pearson correlation analysis was used to analyze the correlation among the above scales. The actor-partner interdependence analysis was used to analyze the impact of mindful parenting on their own and their spouse's parenting stress, as well as the impact on adolescent aggression through parenting stress. Results A total of 472 families completed the effective questionnaires. The estimated value of the subject effect of father's mindfulness parenting on adolescent aggression through father's parenting stress was -0.018(P=0.002), and the estimated value of the object effect of father's mindfulness parenting on adolescent aggression through mother's parenting stress was -0.006(P=0.026). The estimated value of the direct effect of father's mindfulness parenting on adolescent aggression was -0.004(P=0.718). The estimated value of the subject effect of mother's mindfulness parenting on adolescent aggression through mother's parenting stress was -0.026(P<0.001), and the estimated value of the object effect of mother's mindfulness parenting on adolescent aggression through father's parenting stress was -0.007(P=0.012). The estimated value of the direct effect of mother's mindfulness parenting on adolescent aggression was 0.000(P=0.973). Conclusion Mindful parenting can indirectly influence adolescents' aggressive behavior through their own and their spouse's parenting stress, and the actor-partner effect is significant.
