【Abstract】Backgroud With the acceleration of China's aging process, the number of patients with senile dementia has significantly increased.Behavioral and psychological symptoms and poor cognitive function significantly affect the quality of life of elderly dementia patients.Previous studies have shown that music intervention can help improve the behavioral and psychological symptoms as well as cognitive function of elderly dementia patients, but there is limited research on moderate and severe dementia. Objective to investigate the effect of group music intervention on behavioral and psychological symptoms and cognitive function with moderate and severe senile dementia, and to providing insights for the intervention of behavioral and psychological symptoms and cognitive function in this population. Methods A sample of 43 patients with moderate to severe elderly dementia who were hospitalized in Geriatric Psychiatry of Deyang Mental Health from January to July 2023 and met the International Classification of Diseases, tenth edition (ICD-10) diagnostic criteria for dementia were randomly were randomly divided into a control group (n=22) and a study group (n=21)using SPSS 26.0. Both groups received routine drug treatment and nursing care, while the study group received group music intervention for 8 weeks, twice a week, 30 minutes each time. The Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI) and Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) were administered before and after intervention. Results Two patients in the study group dropped out midway, and five patients in the control group dropped out midway. A total of 36 patients completed the study, while the study group (n=20) and the control group (n=16).Before the intervention, there was no significant difference between the study group and the control group in NPI total score and MMSE score(P>0.05). After the intervention, the total score of NPI in the study group was lower than that before the intervention[58.00(49.00,79.25)vs.78.50(55.00,95.50)],the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05), while the MMSE score in the study group was higher than that before the intervention, and the difference was not statistically significant(Z=-0.428, P>0.05).After the intervention, the total NPI score, agitation/aggression score, depression/mood disorder score, anxiety score and abnormal exercise behavior score of the study group was lower than those of the control group, and the difference was statistically significant (Z=-2.183, -2.438, -2.691, -3.716, -2.250,P<0.05), while the MMSE score of the study group was higher than that of the control group, and the difference was not statistically significant(Z=-0.933, P>0.05). Conclusion Group music intervention may ameliorate behavioral and psychological symptoms in patients with moderate and severe senile dementia, but it has no significant improvement effect on cognitive function of patients with moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease. |
