Objective To investigate the psychological characteristics and related factors of residents suffered insomnia during the COVID-19 epidemic, so as to provide references for improving their mental health status. Methods From January to March 2020, residents of a certain city were evaluated using Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS), and divided into two groups according to the assessment results, namely, insomnia group (n=216, AIS score > 6) and non-insomnia group (n=105, AIS score <4). The psychological status of all selected individuals was assessed by Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90), and social demographic data were also collected. Results The scores of somatization, interpersonal sensitivity, hostility, terror and psychoticism factors in SCL-90 were higher in insomnia group than those in non-insomnia group (Z=2.035~2.323, P<0.05). Within insomnia group, the total score of AIS was positively correlated with the scores of obsessive-compulsive behaviour, interpersonal sensitivity and paranoid ideation in SCL-90 (r=0.153, 0.140, 0.159, P<0.05).Conclusion During the COVID-19 epidemic, insomnia residents suffer from psychological problems such as somatization, interpersonal sensitivity, hostility, terror and psychoticism, and the severity of insomnia is closely related to psychological problems such as obsessive-compulsive behaviour, interpersonal sensitivity and paranoid ideation.
