English abstract:
This article reports one case of a treatment resistant, ultra-elderly depressed patient who underwent modified electroconvulsive therapy (MECT). Patient was female, 87 years old, with a history of depression for 8 years, an intermittent episodic course, and had previously responded poorly to a variety of antidepressant medications, and her depression resolved after receiving electroconvulsive therapy. In the last 2 years, the patient experienced a recurrence of depression after a life event, and received MECT for improvement; however, the depression relapsed multiple times if discontinuing MECT. Therefore, in this instance of hospitalization, continuous MECT was given to continue the benefits, and the patient's overall tolerance for multiple electroconvulsive therapy sessions was good. In conjunction with a review of the literature, treatment options for super-elderly medically refractory depressed patients are discussed, providing a reference for the use of MECT in the treatment of ultra-elderly drug-refractory depression.
